The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a deeply spiritual journey, drawing thousands of pilgrims every year. Set in the remote Himalayan region of Tibet, it requires more than just devotion — proper planning, physical readiness, and understanding of the journey are equally important.
At Samrat Tours & Travels, we’ve organized this guide to help you prepare thoroughly before you set out for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Weather conditions along the Kailash route can vary drastically — from strong sun to harsh snow. Here’s what you’ll need to pack:
Thermal innerwear (2–3 sets)
Down or heavy-duty insulated jacket
Waterproof windcheater / rain jacket
Fleece jackets or pullovers
Trekking pants and warm track pants
Woolen cap, sun hat, balaclava
UV-protective sunglasses
Gloves (thermal and waterproof)
Woolen socks (4–5 pairs)
Comfortable walking shoes (well-broken in)
Slippers or sandals (for camps/guesthouses)
Sunscreen (SPF 50+)
Toiletries and quick-dry towel
Wet wipes and sanitizers
Personal medication and first aid kit
Water purification tablets or filters
Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
Thermal water bottle or flask
Small backpack for daily use
Original passport (valid for at least 6 months)
Photocopies of passport and ID
Passport-size photographs (at least 4)
Visa documents (handled by us)
Travel to Kailash involves passing through Tibet, which requires a Tibet Travel Permit and a Chinese Group Visa. This process is handled entirely by Samrat Tours & Travels, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
Your original passport must be submitted at least 30 days before your Yatra departure date.
The passport should be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of travel.
Indian passport holders only are allowed for group visa processing via Kathmandu.
NRIs and foreign nationals require a different procedure; contact us for specific documentation.
The yatra reaches altitudes of over 5,600 meters (18,500 ft), and the 3-day Kora (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash can be physically demanding. Basic fitness and stamina are essential.
Start brisk walking or hiking for at least 30–45 minutes daily, 1–2 months before the trip.
Practice breathing exercises (Pranayama) to help with high-altitude adaptation.
Avoid smoking or alcohol prior to travel.
If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, asthma, or other chronic illnesses, consult your doctor.
Travelers between the ages of 18 and 69 are permitted for the Yatra.
A mandatory health checkup may be required before visa processing.
Those above age 65 are recommended to carry a recent medical fitness certificate.
All pilgrims must have comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude travel, emergency evacuation, and hospitalization. This is for your safety and peace of mind.
If you need help choosing the right policy, our team can guide you through options available in Nepal or your home country.
Your Yatra typically starts from Kathmandu, and the overland route may take you through these key points:
Syabrubesi or Hilsa (depending on route chosen)
Kerung – first entry point into Tibet
Saga – acclimatization and overnight halt
Lake Mansarovar – spiritual bathing and rituals
Darchen – base camp for Kailash Kora
Dirapuk – Dolma La – Zuthulpuk – 3-day Kora route
Each location involves varying altitudes and climate conditions. Our itinerary includes ample time for acclimatization to reduce risks of altitude sickness. We also have medical team on the standby and heli chartered from boarder if pilgrims face health problems.
Follow the group leader’s and guide’s instructions at all times.
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Maintain a calm and respectful attitude — this is a spiritual pilgrimage.
Carry enough local currency (CNY/NPR) for personal use.
Overexert yourself on high-altitude days.
Skip meals or forget your prescribed medications.
Litter or disrespect local customs and environments.
Attempt the Kora if you are unwell — there are safe alternatives for rest.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is not just a trip — it’s a disciplined journey that demands mental focus, physical preparation, and respect for the terrain and tradition. With the right preparation, it becomes an unforgettable spiritual experience.
Our team at Samrat Tours & Travels is here to support you before, during, and after the Yatra — from visa processing to altitude tips to emergency care.
